ExoplanetKyoto

ExoplanetKyoto – an unique exoplanetary database has been launched from Kyoto University* in 2016 aiming to provide a more-symphatic exoplanetary image. Although, none of the exoplanetary images have been captured optically, over 3,900 confirmed exoplanets have been found by November 2018. There is a strong need to provide a typical illustration of these planets. Several different space authorities, including NASA, ESA, as well as independent organizations and artists have provided these images, however none of them provide imaginary pictures for all confirmed planets on the exoplanetary list.
We have created a series of textures that may fit scientific features and impressions for general comprehension of the public. In general, we classified the exoplanets according to their sizes and calculated their blackbody temperature. We have prepared a basic set of textures that may fit certain categories of the planets. In addition, specific features of individual planets are included, such as whether they are tidally locked or not, or whether they are covered by an ocean and vegetation, and if so, what colour. At the same time, there is a risk of providing a standard image for those planets without “real proof” simply because they might be wrong and false impressions to be given audiences. Nevertheless, since all information are not at scientificly confirmed, the images naturally contain “artistic impressions”  - in other words, the essense of art. In this field associated in Exoplanetary study, there are plenty of instances that require harmonized study between “pure science” and “arts”.

Born in Otsu, Yosuke Alexandre Yamashiki,attended Kyoto University where he earned his B. Eng. in Civil Engineering in 1990. From Kyoto he went to the University of São Paulo, Brazil (Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo http://www.poli.usp.br), earning his Masters in Engineering. in 1994, then studying Global Environment Engineering in Kyoto in the Graduate School of Engineering where he earned his PhD in Engineering in 1999. During his doctoral course, he worked in an international NGO (ILEC ) as a researcher. After this, he worked at UNEP-DTIE-IETC as an Associate Programme Officer for two years, contributing to the establishment of La Plata River Basin Environmental Management Network (RIGA) and the 3rd La Plata River Basin Workshop held in the City of Posadas, Argentina in 2001.

 

 

Yosuke then joined the Department of Urban Environmental Engineering at Kyoto University as an Assistant Professor in 2001, then in 2004 moved to Nihon University where he was a Lecturer in Civil Engineering. The Global Water Resources Assessment Laboratory was launched at that time. He also worked at the Faculty of Science in the University of Tokyo as a visiting Lecturer. After his promotion to Associate Professor at Nihon University, he again joined Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute. During the period of research, he worked on disaster mitigation for flood and sediment disasters, environmental monitoring with a focus on radioactive contaminants, and water resource management. Yosuke then joined the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability at Kyoto University in 2013, where he hold his current position. Yosuke has received the Best Paper Award in 2014 for his research in monitoring of environmental radioactivity through the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources. In July 2015, he was nominated as Chairperson of the UNESCO-IHP International Initiative of Water Quality (IIWQ) Experts Advisory Group. From April 2017 he was nominated as Vice Chairperson of the Unit of Synergetic Studies for Space, Kyoto University, where he promotes activities associated with development of ExoKyoto – an exoplanetary database – and scientific application of that product.
